Franciscan Prayers and Devotions

This is a project in development.  Our fraternity has a person who is going to diligently look at modern Franciscan Prayer books like the Secular Franciscan Companion and other recently published books and compare them with Public Domain Franciscan Prayer Books and Manuals.

There are two purposes of this web page:

  1. To identify Franciscan Prayers and Devotions that have fallen into disuse.
  2. To compare modern prayers with those of the past to see if there are any radical changes.

One would expect that with new Saints and Blesseds that a Litany of Franciscan Saints would continue to grow and be longer than past Litany of Franciscan Saints. However, just as there have been 3 updates to Fr. Habig’s Book of Franciscan Saints and Blessed, many of the updates in newer versions may have replaced the names of lesser known saints that were revered in the 1800s. Fr. Habig’s Book of Franciscan Saints and Blesseds provides only one saint biography for each day of the year, which causes in the updates with new saints to remove older saints’ biography summaries into obscurity.

As an example, it has already been identified that in the Franciscan Crown that there were phrases added in the middle of the Hail Mary reflecting the mystery being prayed back in the 1800s. Modern versions of the Franciscan Crown do not include these phrases.

Also, there are new prayer cards for the Prayer of Peace of St. Francis that omit the phrase “where there is discord, harmony” but found in older prayer cards.

If there are any prayers or devotions that have fallen into obscurity or there are omissions in the modern rendering of the Franciscan prayer or devotion, or a part of the history or practice is omitted, we will include those omissions on this web page.
